Remember in the last post where we said, “You should select the right Honeywell air cleaner… and filter type is one of the factors you should consider…”. Well, in this post we’re going to do just that by revealing the full story of the AirGenius.
For quite a long time, the talk is all about HEPA. Inside or outside of the air purification industry people know that if you want clean air HEPA is what you go for.
It’s the industry STANDARD they said. Mechanical rules! Take it or leave it…
But they have not seen it coming… A technology that filters air is without “filters”! We’re talking about the ifD. For the electronic addicts, the ifD is that technology that will revolutionize the entire industry.
But for you, is it really as good as people are saying? Will it work for your situation?
This awesome compilation distills 10 facts you must know before ever buying the Honeywell AirGenius (This information can save you thousands).
In the Table of Contents below, you will see the topics we have covered. In a hurry? You can skip over to the section of your interest.
Let’s get started…
#1. How This New Technology Will Stop Your Wallet From Bleeding!
First, the ifD filter is made to be permanent. It means you don’t need to buy or replace the main filter every time when it’s dirty. Saving you tonnes of money.
Second, it saves energy too. The ifD filter is porous and you can actually see through it. This is why it doesn’t require high power to run (overcome resistance). The potential cut in energy consumption and operating costs is huge.
Third, now you can turn the unit on for a long time to maximize air purification. The result is an uninterrupted clean air home environment and a healthy lifestyle. With that, you can kiss goodbye to your doctors…
#2. A Warning When Using The AirGenius Air Cleaners
The ifD is developed by Darwin Technology International and patented in 2003. It’s then licensed to several companies. And Honeywell is one of them.
So what’s the technology behind the ifD? Here’s the idea:
An ionizer emits a stream of ions into the room where they scatter and rub off electrical charge to the particles. Then using a fan, the charged particles are drawn into an ifD filter that has a positive surface. The strong attraction between the opposite poles attracts one another pulling dirt out of the air. Leaving only clean air through.
Unfortunately, it releases a byproduct called the ozone. While all AirGenius air purifiers have been tested and certified safe (below 0.050 ppm), they are not 100% free of ozone.
#3. An Easy Way To Pick Your Honeywell AirGenius Air Cleaners?
The Honeywell AirGenius 3, 4, 5, 6 share the same genes. They all have an ifD filter and vary only by some extra specs. As you can see in the Table below, AirGenius 3, 4 and 5 are differed by the number of fan speeds.
But the AirGenius 6 is quite special in many ways. We want to briefly touch on the smart features that make this model such a great product.
Allergen Alert: Sends an alert when the outside pollen and other allergen levels are high in your zone via Accu-Weather.
Allergen Auto Set: Automatically controls the air purifier based on your local outdoor allergen levels.

#4. Why You Can’t Rely On “ifD” Alone To Solve Your Air Problems?
The ifD filter is not very good at removing smells. Since no charge can be “glued” to odor (volatile gases), they will escape the ifD filter unaffected. At times removing particles may help reduce odor but for best result, you will need additional treatment to work with the ifD like activated carbon filter.
The AirGenius includes an optional odor-reducing pre-filter “K” in the product box. You will need to replace the washable pre-filter that is already in the unit with the “K” pre-filter.
Do expect some improvement but no guarantee of total removal.
Vs. Cigarette Smoke
Heavy smoking has no effect on ifD filters efficiency? They claim to have tested with the smoke of as many as 720 cigarettes per square foot of filter area in accordance with the Japan Electrical Manufacturers Association (JEMA) standards.
We can agree that the tests above are useful for assessing the filter’s endurance rather than its cleaning effectiveness.
But our position on cigarette smoke is clear. Click here to learn more…
Vs. Bacteria. Germ. Viruses. Mold.
The ifD filter can capture up to 99.99% of particles down to 0.3 microns (smaller than nearly all bacteria, viruses, mold and spores).
We can confidently say that the ifD is highly effective in fighting against these microbes.
#5. Two “Guys” That Can Help You Decides
So let’s see… what we can learn from those who have repeatedly used the AirGenius.
From our reviews, the Honeywell AirGenius have gotten some happy and not-so-happy feedback from their customers. The number is about 6 to 1.
Down below, you’ll see the most common ones from both sides and a short comment (by us).
From Not-So-Happy Owners
Cons #1: Some said the unit gives off plastic smell and not very effective in reducing odor or volatile organic compounds (VOC).
Comments: The ifD filter is not a piece of technology intended for odor control. Treating gases is not like treating particles in the air. It requires special treatment. Though carbon filter pads are useful in this remark, the overall result is still minimal and short term.
Typical of home appliances, you will experience some smell being off-gassed when it is in use for the first time. The good news is it will eventually faint after some time.
Cons #2: Some said the unit is loud when running at higher speeds. A few even heard a slight buzzing noise coming from the ionizer.
Comments: We have not seen a fan that can move air without any noise. The higher the resistances the stronger the fan works hence the noise it makes.
But the thing is people always have different levels of tolerance for noise. Some might find the noise unbearable, while others deem acceptable.
Lower speeds 1 & 2 are perfectly fine for most people while higher speeds attract some mixed reactions. But the impact is said to be intermittent as higher speeds are generally used for intensive but shorter rounds of cleaning.
The buzzing electrostatic noise signals a defective system. It should be returned as soon as possible.
Cons #3: Some said the unit emits ozone. A few even experienced breathing issues after prolonged exposure.
Comments: By now you should be clear that the AirGenius is an electronic air purifier. It has an ionizer that releases charges into the air and recaptures them in the filter. Ozone is the byproduct.
The question is whether the amount of ozone emitted meets the limit. You can see the entire list of air cleaners here.
It’s been repeatedly advised that allergies and asthma sufferers or those susceptible to ozone to avoid using electronic air cleaners.
From Happy Proud Owners
Pros #1: Many of them said the AirGenius have been effective in removing particles out of the air. There’re clear signs of improvement such as reduced cases of flu, breathing issues, and allergies or asthma.
Comments: The ifD filters are proven to effectively remove 99.99% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. Also, the AirGenius have high airflow that helps filtrate the room air several times per hour.
Pros #2: A good majority of them applaud the low operating costs after using the unit for some time and they can already see the potential huge saving.
Comments: There’re two areas where the monies are saved.
First, the AirGenius have no filter to be replaced except the odor-absorbing pre-filter “K” every few months (low cost). The ifD filter is permanent and can be repeatedly washed.
Second, if you compare the pressure drop of the HEPA and ifD filter, it is about 200Pa to 10Pa. The low-pressure drop of ifD filter means that less power is required to draw the air through the filter. That translates into less energy use and a big saving on utility bills.
Pros #3: A great percentage of them agreed that the AirGenius is easy to maintain. The cleaning can generally be done once every 2 to 3 months. The only trouble is waiting for the ifD to dry after each washing.
Comments: The reality is the frequency of cleaning depends upon how quickly particles are being loaded onto the filter.
Another concern is do ifD filters degrade after repeated use. Unlikely. Because the ifD filters are tough on (normal) temperature swing. Though they are not designed for wet conditions, small amounts of moisture have little effect on performance.
The caveat is excessive moisture would compromise the electrical fields within the filter. So avoid running the unit when the ifD is not completely dry.
#6. Why The Saving From Buying A Cheap Electronic Air Cleaner Will Reappear In Your Monthly Utility Bill!
The ifD and traditional ionic filters have the same way of charging particles and attracting them with an oppositely charged surface. The difference lies in the charging technology whether or not it’s dielectric.
ifD’s dielectric system has no bare electrical parts that can cause arcing. This allows them to be placed very close to each other creating powerful electrical fields for high-efficiency cleaning.
You will not see this in traditional electronic air cleaners. The lack of insulation technology widens the gap between bare electrodes to prevent arcing. Thus limiting the field strength to attract particle out of the air.
#7. A Map To Show You The Way
Here, we include the owner manual for your reference. You will find some good advice and safety instructions inside. It’s also a handy guide to help you troubleshoot.
#8. What Else Are There To Know
We have come across some questions from the public. Here they’re:
How to clean ifD filter?
Two ways to clean the ifD filter. First, remove the filter from the unit and vacuum across the filter’s surface. It will scrub off dirt and other accumulated particles from inside the filter’s pores. Second, you can wash it with water and let it dry completely then install it back.
For the washable pre-filter, you can wash it every few months. But for the carbon pad pre-filter (the “K” filter), you need to replace it every 3-4 months.
Why unit is not turning on?
The air cleaner has safety features to ensure that the unit is ready for operation. You need to check if the ifD filter and rear grille are installed correctly. You should hear a “click” sound when you re-install both the ifD and the rear grille. If the issue persists, please contact the customer service.
Can you replace the ifD filter with true HEPA filter?
No, you can’t replace the ifD filter with the HEPA. The fan inside the AirGenius has been properly sized for the ifD filter (low-resistance). Putting a HEPA will force the fan to run at high pressure that can cause damage.

#10. How Long From Unboxing To Stopping Your Sneezing?
What’s inside the box…
Once you have opened the box, you will find a copy of the owner’s manual and safety instructions, and an optional odor-reducing pre-filter “K”.
What you gonna do next is to slowly take the loose items out from the box and make the AirGenius stands firmly on the ground in an upward position. Then remove all the protective packaging materials like plastic wraps and cushions.
Before you turn on the AirGenius, it is always a good idea to inspect the unit for any visible damage on the housing, cord and control panel. The AirGenius should come in one perfect piece and it doesn’t need to be assembled.
If you think, somehow, you need to get your hands dirty, something is wrong. You should contact the seller immediately.
Next, open up the filter panel to check if the ifD filter is still wrapped in plastic. Make sure it is removed to avoid getting the plastic smell. Finally, put in the pre-filter “K” if you want to reduce odors in your room.
That’s it… Turn on the power… and enjoy the clean air…
