7 Best Air Purifiers For Smoke Of 2020 That You Wish You Know Earlier

Are You Making These Mistakes Before Buying Air Purifiers For Smoke?

Smokers strike back. They’re amazed why non-smokers hate smokers so much. Something they found pretty stupid. And if you’re a non-smoker too – like me. Read on and you’ll see why – often require a rethink.

“Your killing yourself you know?”

Serious? You think we don’t already know this? But the question is why smokers get this most? Look at obesity rates compared to smoking cases. One side is clearly badly demonized than the other…

“Its hurting people around you!”

Yes. But so does the carbon monoxide let off by cars in mass numbers. And so do the factory that produces smog…

“It smells”

Yeah, so do you… And not all smokers smell. Jesus…

“Your only enriching the tobacco company”

No. Just helping farmers whose livelihood happened to be tobacco crops. Further, it’s also taxed. So the money goes towards hospitals, schools, welfare, and etc…

“How much a pack costs, how many cigarettes you smoke, and for how many years… Sum it up and you can afford a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce”.

Then where the *censored* is your Ferrari!…

Talk But Don’t Come In Guns Blazing

But what if your downstairs neighbor smokes incessantly and the smoke wafts into your apartment? Are you going to sigh loudly “omg smoking again” while on your balcony? Or stomping loudly in a bid to ruin his life?

You see. It’s not always easy to tell smokers to stop smoking. Even though smoking is objectively bad for you, it’s also a pleasurable vice for a lot of people. And to tell how they can or can’t do in the privacy of their own home is both a crazy idea and sure to ignite a series of emotion bombs if you try.

So what else could you do?

The truth is you have all the power how you want to react to this. No matter what else you do, don’t waste your life being mad because you can’t control how others behave. Instead, look for some kind of compromise you could come to. Such as these.

Could he smoke and ensure the smoke won’t waft up to you? Could he smoke with the doors closed? Buy a vape? Get a little fan that blows the smoke in a different direction? Put any kind of plants or flowers as a barrier? Tell a small fib about having asthma? Burn some kind of incense?

But if nothing works out, what’s next? Perhaps this is the best last resort you’d look into. But why I only tell you now? Let me tell you one secret – no joke. It’s about air purifiers for smoke.

What The Experts Say

ASHRAE, in their 16-page position document dated June 26, 2019, reaffirmed “At present, the only means of effectively eliminating health risk associated with indoor exposure is to ban smoking activity… and no air cleaning technologies should be relied upon to control health risks…”

That’s the reason why. Let’s make it very clear. No air purifiers can yet guarantee 100% purification of cigarette smoke. So the best solution is always to eliminate the source.

But if that’s not possible, then by all means use air purifiers as one of your strategies to clean up the pollution. Another strategy you should apply is good ventilation.

Wait a minute! I hear ya. How about wildfire smoke? According to US-EPA, treating it is easy. Reason? Because there’re far fewer nasty chemicals in forest smoke than cigarette smoke.

forest-fire

Here, from the many air purifiers I’ve researched (34 to be exact), I’ve singled out 7 that are highly and distinctly effective in tackling smoke and odors. Rest assured about their particle removal capability. So check them out today! And you’ll be amazed just how easily and quickly your smoke will go away.

Let’s get started…

#1. Blueair Classic 480i Air Purifier: Best Smoke Stopper

What makes Blueair Classic 480i stand out – when smoke is your utmost concern. Besides looking sleek in white and curvy Swedish design, one thing sets apart. It is its unique trademark SmokeStop filter.

As known most air purifiers use activated carbon to remove common gaseous pollutants like smells, smoke, and VOCs. And it’s fair to say the advancement in carbon technology determines why one model is superior than another.

So let’s see. SmokeStop filter uses pure coconut carbon which is highly porous and bacteria resistant in nature. And it’s been proven to work 4 times faster than other carbon filters. Now that’s only one part.

The other part is HEPASilent – as they called it. It’s not the traditional HEPA. But thanks to the electrostatic and mechanical filtration technology, not only it works just as good as the HEPA, it’s quieter and more energy-efficient.

If there’s one thing I must pick from this otherwise complete machine. It’s this – the airflow pattern is one-directional. Simply the dust that got stirred up does not go back to the intake in an efficient way – some will resettle downstream instead.

What We Liked:

  • AHAM rated for room size 434 sq. ft
  • Tobacco smoke CADR 280
  • Uses as little power as a lightbulb 15W to 90W, low to high speed
  • Works quietly from 32-52 dBA. Awarded the prestigious Quiet Mark
  • Integrated air quality sensors monitor air quality in real-time and track changes
  • Auto mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • 3-speed control, timer, change filter indicator, remote control, WIFI enabled, and Alexa compatible
  • Sleek and clean Scandinavian design
  • Robust steel housing

What We Didn’t Like:

  • The replacement filter is costly. Every 6 months or 4,380 hours when used 24/7
  • One directional airflow reduces cleaning efficiency

Bottom Line:

Give it a try TODAY! And see the difference Blueair Classic 480i is going to make in your life. It’s quiet and quick but most of all effective. Let SmokeStop Filter be your last line of defense against smoke attack – not your lungs.

#2. Blue Pure 211+ Air Purifier: Best Cleaning Power & Efficiency

Now if you want a powerful yet beautiful air cleaner, the Blue Pure 211+ is not to be missed. Look! does it not resemble the iconic Apple iPhone? Clean and simple. And as you zoom in, right in front of it is the familiar one-button control – yes that’s all you need to run this model.

This unit has 3-stage filtration – fabric pre-filter, particle filter and carbon filter as shown below along with their duties. And here’s the real deal. If you open up the particle filter and measure up the area – you’ll find a total of 46 sq. ft. Now that’s massive by any standard.

With these material, deeper pockets can be made to hold more dust for long period of time.

Further, its 360 design allows air to return to the intake uniformly from all 4-side. This ensures all pollutants within the vicinity are captured efficiently – without resettling issue.

However, I’d remind you that Blueair filter is not the usual HEPA filter. It can’t screen out every fine smoke particles from tobacco. But it’ll work fine for ashes, soot and odors from wildfire.

What We Liked:

  • AHAM rated for room size 540 sq. ft.
  • Smoke CADR 350.
  • 2-in-1 particle and activated carbon filter
  • Washable fabric pre-filter makes the main filter last longer
  • Cleans medium to large rooms up to 540 sq. ft. (CADR 350)
  • Simple one-button control and beautiful Swedish design personalized for home
  • 3-speed and change filter indicator
  • Draws air from all sides ensure no pollutant escapes
  • Save energy use only 30W – 60W, low to high speed
  • Works so quietly that you might have to check whether it’s been switched on, 31 – 56 dBA

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Use non-HEPA filter but still able to remove 99% of particles down to 2.5 microns
  • Lack of other functions like timer
  • Filter change cost is about one-fourth of the unit price. Last up to 1 year.

Bottom Line:

The Blue Pure 211+ may not be the greatest tobacco smoke buster out there without the HEPA. But with its 360 design and superb filter capacity, the effectiveness will not pale in comparison with other air purifiers.

#3. Medify MA-40 Air Purifier: Best Grade Filter

The Medify name is still considerably new to the air purification industry as compared to the heavyweights. But in recent years they have put serious effort into building good quality air purifiers that have rocked the market. Medify MA-40 is one of them.

This model has a 3-in-1 filter pack that consists of a pre-filter, a HEPA (H13) medical-grade filter, and an activated carbon filter. But having good filters is only part of the equation. The other part relies heavily on the success of the fan and air chamber design to produce high pressure for maximum airflow.

While there’s no question of what a standard H13 can do to clean up smoke particles, the quality of activated carbon used proves to be the difference. The MA-40 uses real carbon pellets to absorb and neutralize odors. It has a far longer shelf life than a carbon pad filter.

The biggest concern we had with the M-40 is the reliability of the particle sensor after a long period of use. This might adversely affect the auto fan mode function.

What We Liked:

  • Medical Grade HEPA (H13) removes particles up to 99.97% as small as 0.1 microns
  • 3-in-1 cleanable pre-filter, HEPA, and activated carbon filter.
  • Cleans medium to large rooms up to 800 sq. ft. (CADR 330)
  • Modern tempered glass & touch panel design
  • Particle sensor built-in with visible air quality indicator
  • Auto fan mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • 4-speed, timer, child lock, night mode, and change filter indicator
  • Takes up a small footprint
  • Lifetime warranty

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Reliability of the particle sensor
  • One directional airflow reduces cleaning efficiency
  • Filter change cost is about one-fourth of the unit price. Replace every 6 months

Bottom Line:

If you desire a perfectly clean air that matches the air quality of the OT room and instantly relieves you from the harmful smoke particles and odors, the Medify MA-40 is there for you.

#4. Levoit LV-H133 Air Purifier: Best Silent Fan & 360 Filtration

The Levoit LV-H133 is launched in 2018 to gradually replace the old classic LV-H132. This new model has been totally overhauled to bring the cleaning power and efficiency up to another level.

Featuring a brand new 3-in-1 filter pack, this tower employs a pre-filter, true HEPA and activated carbon filter to clean 99.97% of smoke particles and odors down to 0.3 microns. To help trap more for longer periods of time, the true HEPA is built with deeper pockets with a total surface area up to 22 sq. ft.

The next big thing is the breakthrough design of the tower turbine fan to move more air through the filter from 360°. This carefully crafted fan creates a cyclone-like draught that stirs up particles so the intake can suck in efficiently without breaking out noise.

At AHAM rated room size 442 sq. ft. and tobacco smoke CADR 285, there’s no doubt this model is one of the best tower purifiers out there.

While this 2 ft. high and 1 ft. diameter air purifier did have a size advantage, it’d be perfect if the air intake area on the housing is maximized to allow uniform loading on the filter.

What We Liked:

  • Aircraft engine-inspired turbine fan design
  • Noise level 25 dB on low speed, less than 54 dB on high
  • Auto mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • LED Display: 3-speed, timer, sleep mode, and change filter indicator, but it can be turned off so it won’t keep you awake at night
  • Save energy consume only 33W power
  • Fully certified by CARB, FCC and ETL.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Air intake area on the housing is not maximized
  • Filter change cost is about one-fourth of the unit price. Replace every 6-8 months

Bottom Line:

If you are one of those sensitive people who are easily disturbed by the slightest of sound or light while you sleep and absolutely hate the feeling of getting choked by smoke, the Levoit LV-H133 has you covered.

#5. Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier: Best Value for Money

Winix is a veteran brand from Korea. In all our reviews, the Winix 5500-2 air purifier offers the best value for money. This inexpensive model has 3 layers of filters. Two of them (pre-filter and activated carbon filter) are made to be washable so you don’t need to change them often – saving you tonnes of money.

Compares with the older model 5300-2, 2 things come up. The 5500-2 is upgraded with remote control and a quality carbon filter. Unlike a carbon pad filter, it’s filled with real carbon pellets in grids to maximize odors absorption.

Alongside the true HEPA grade filter, they can screen 99.97% of smoke particles or odors or any impurities down to 0.3 microns. At AHAM rated room size 360 sq. ft. and tobacco smoke CADR 232, this unit has no reason to price under $200.

Despite all the goodness, there were some claims that link the built-in PlasmaWave to irritant or ozone. But if you’re worried about it too, you can always isolate it with just a touch of a button.

What We Liked:

  • Auto mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • Sleep mode changes fan speeds and dims the indicator lights based on the amount of ambient light in the room
  • 4-speed, timer, smart sensor, change filter indicator and come with a remote
  • Low noise level of 27.8 dB on low speed
  • Fully certified by AHAM, CARB, and Energy Star

What We Didn’t Like:

  • One directional airflow reduces cleaning efficiency
  • Some link PlasmaWave to irritant or ozone

Bottom Line:

If you are still sitting on the fence juggling between performance and price, given their long term reputation for creating products that work, you’ll not find another other than the Winix 5500-2.

#6. Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier: Best Compact & Mighty

We’re impressed at how this small machine works like a giant. The Coway AP-1512HH air purifier remains the most compact and mighty air purifier in our review. We’re appreciative that this model is putting in mind many untold miseries of people living in small space, while not offsetting performance.

First, the unit is tightly packed with 3 layers of filters (a washable pre-filter, an activated carbon, and a true HEPA filter) which is capable of removing 99.97% of impurities down to 0.3 microns.

Second, at AHAM rated room size 361 sq. ft and smoke CADR 233, it’s obvious that the performance has not been compromised by its size. But moreover, it has the full power to do the air cleaning work.

Our review did reveal a few issues, the biggest of which is the quality of the carbon filter used. The truth is there’s very little carbon content on the carbon pad and we don’t expect it to pick up tobacco smoke and odors very effectively.

What We Liked:

  • Cleans medium rooms up to 361 sq. ft. (CADR 233)
  • Pollution sensor allows real-time air quality monitoring
  • Auto mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • Eco mode stops fan automatically when no pollution is detected for 30 minutes
  • 3-speed, timer, change filter indicator
  • Noise level of 24.4 dB on low speed

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some links ionizer to ozone emission
  • Lower carbon content on the carbon filter pad
  • One directional airflow reduces cleaning efficiency
  • Filter change cost is above average. Carbon and HEPA filter to replace every 6 & 12 months respectively

Bottom Line:

In our view, the Coway AP-1512HH will be the finest choice for people who do not have the luxury of big space like in an apartment or flat and those highly affected by poor air quality such as caused by wildfire.

#7. Bissell air400 Professional Air Purifier: Super Thick Carbon

Pure beauty. I doubt if it is not built on the principle of the famous Apple iphone, with design so clean and simple. Such a treat to the eyes and smooth to the touching hands. But that isn’t all.

If you open the front door, immediately you’ll see the pre-filter, HEPA filter, and then activated carbon filter. Now you probably already know the use of carbon filter. It’s used for removing odors, gasses, and VOCs. And here’s the secret.

This unit utilizes 1.5 inch thick carbon filter, not of carbon pad type but carbon pellets filled in honeycomb grids. If you do check, you’ll know not many air purifiers have over specs like this. Together with HEPA that captures 99.97% down to 0.3 microns of particles. This is indeed something pretty special.

What We Liked:

  • Cleans extra rooms up to 1200 sq. ft.
  • 1.5 inch thick activated carbon filter to capture strong odor
  • Particles sensor allows real-time air quality monitoring
  • Auto mode changes fan speeds automatically based on air quality
  • 3-speed, timer, change filter indicator

What We Didn’t Like

  • CADR rating not AHAM-verified
  • Noise level can be high at higher settings
  • One directional airflow reduces cleaning efficiency
  • Filter change cost is above average. Carbon and HEPA filter to replace every 6 & 12 months respectively

Bottom Line:

Now you know you can rely on the Bissell air400. Exactly because at the heart of it is a 1.5 inch thick activated carbon filter. An over specs many air purifiers dare not attempt without a powerful and yet quiet DC fan. Try it and you’ll be amazed at how effective and fast this unit removes odors.

Is It For You?

The Blue Pure 211+ might not be the most specific tobacco smoke buster out there without the HEPA. If that’s meant to realize higher airflow for superior cleaning efficiency, you can say goodbye to the wildfire smoke and smell in your home.

And if you desire a perfectly clean air that matches the air quality of the OT room and instantly relieves you from the harmful smoke particles and odor, the Medify MA-40 is there for you.

If you are one of those sensitive people who are easily disturbed by the slightest of sound or light while you sleep. And absolutely hate the feeling of getting choked by smoke, the Levoit LV-H133 has you covered.

If you are still sitting on the fence juggling between performance and price, given their long term reputation for creating products that work at a reasonable price, you’ll not find another other than the Winix 5500-2.
