The 5 Best Air Purifiers for Allergies and Asthma of 2020

Rhinitis, Pharyngitis, Laryngitis, Dermatitis, Conjunctivitis… Asthma

Found something common on your doctor’s scribble? These sick sounding words are the names of allergic diseases. And asthma is an allergic reaction.

If you’ve been dealing with them, we feel we owe you something that can effectively solve your situation right away.

But the question is “do air cleaners actually work for allergies?” Feeling dissatisfied, we scour through numerous papers and books. There we found this…

In a 7-page Rostrum published by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Indoor Allergen Committee, they conclude that air filtration does reduce indoor levels of ambient particles that might trigger allergies.

Yet their performance is subject to the pros and cons of the filtration and air cleaning technologies used within the devices as warned by ASHRAE.

Based on the data, we’ve identified the best 5 air purifiers for allergies and asthma from a variety of air purifiers that claim to work on anything. Many of which tried “very marketable features” to remain attractive despite no value added to the original purpose of air purifier – which is to clean air.

Here we go…

#1. Dyson HP04 Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier: Best Smart & Hybrid

The Dyson HP04 air purifier is rocking the market by defying almost everything a traditional air purifier can-do and should-do.

The main showcase is the super smart functions that can continuously monitor indoor air quality (particles, allergens, VOCs, and NO2). It then plots a graph and shows it on the LCD. Based on real-time air quality, it changes the fan speeds to clean up the air in the most efficient manner.

It’s vital to understand the link between temperature, relative humidity, and mold growth. If we’re serious about combating allergies and asthma. This is why we’re delighted to see this model has a built-in heating function to raise the space temperature – especially in winter. Learn why we think it’s a perfect gift for you.

Further, the HP04 two-half filters have 60 times more HEPA media and 3 times more activated carbon than the previous model. It sets to capture 99.97% of allergens and other pollutants down to 0.3 microns and removes odors from the microorganism.

While we’re totally drawn to the wonders of HP04, it is not without any downside:

First, as the high-velocity air exits the loop, it creates a low-pressure drawing unfiltered surrounding air in and mixes with the purified air before discharging. This could cause problems for people needing 100% filtered air.

Second, the only way to achieve high airflow with a small fan is to put it on high speed. But the side effect is the “regenerated” noise that is so hard to treat. This explains why the noise level can go up to 62 dB at higher fan speeds.

What We Liked:

  • Multi-functions: HEPA air purifier, space heater, and fan in one. Heats with thermostat control in winter. Cools with airflow in summer.
  • Cleans 99.97% of allergens down to 0.3 microns and removes VOCs, odors, NO2
  • Automatically senses air pollutants and controls air purification process
  • Displays air quality levels on LCD: ultrafine particles (PM2.5), allergens (PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Combined airflow about 617 cfm throughout the whole room in 350 degrees.
  • Backward airflow mode purifies without cooling or heating
  • WIFI connect to Dyson Link App to see real-time reports on indoor & outdoor air quality, temperature, humidity, and filter life, to control remotely and to create schedules
  • Alexa enabled, night mode
  • Filter design ensure a completely sealed system and are super easy to maintain
  • Certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
  • 2-year warranty covers for parts and labor

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not verified by AHAM or CADR standards. Tested internally
  • Total airflow is actually the sum of unfiltered surrounding air induced + purified air. Longer periods of run time to achieve an equivalent result.
  • Pricey unit and replacement filter. Last up to 1 year when running 12 hours a day on Auto mode

Bottom Line:

The Dyson HP04 air purifier has all the reasons to top our review. If you want to be impressed by this high-flying device every day and let it makes your day free of allergies and asthma, you have to go with this model. It’ll make a difference.

#2. RabbitAir MinusA2 SPA-780A Air Purifier: Best Style & Effective Filtration

This award-winning RabbitAir MinusA2 SPA-780A air purifier has shown an air purifier, while it has to work, doesn’t need to be utterly boring. From the front, it looks like a piece of art perfect to complement any living space.

On the inside, is the 6-stage filtration that helps filter out the tiniest of impurities out of your room air. It works without anybody noticing what it actually does.

The 6-stage filtration consists of a cleanable pre-filter, a medium filter, a BioGS HEPA, a customized filter, and an activated carbon filter. All are tightly sealed in a solid frame to prevent air leak. See the 6 filtration breakdown below:

  • Pre-filter (permanent) – traps large-sized allergens, dust, and particles
  • Medium filter – traps particles larger than 1 micron
  • BioGS HEPA – traps 99.97% allergens and particles down to 0.3 microns
  • Customized filter – choose from 4 filters selection (see below)
  • Activated carbon filter – reduces odors, VOCs and chemicals
  • Negative ionizer – increases contaminants removal efficiency

Unlike any other HEPA, the BioGS HEPA is capable of reducing allergens buildup (dust mites, mold, pollen, pet dander) and bacteria and viruses growth on the filter.

For the customized filter, it has 4 filter options based on specific needs:

  • Germ defense – for removal of bacteria, mold spores, particles that carry viruses
  • Pet Allergy – for removal of pet dander, pet allergens
  • Toxin Absorber – for removal of VOCs and other chemicals
  • Odor remover – for removal of odors from pets, cigarettes, cooking, mildew

In our reviews, we found that some of the air cleaner manufacturers like to use a flash front or back panel to make their toys look good. The SPA-780A is no exception. But this could affect the CADR score due to high air friction.

What We Liked:

  • For standard use: cleans the air up to 815 sq. ft.
  • For allergy sufferers: cleans the air up to 408 sq. ft.
  • Brushless DC fan generates low noise level from 25.6 dBA to 51.3 dBA
  • Save energy use 7W to 61W, 5 fan speeds
  • Odor & particles sensor detect the amount of pollutants and automatically changes fan speeds based on air quality
  • Light sensor automatically change to sleep mode when the room darkens, and resume normal mode when light levels increase
  • Can be stand-alone or mounted on the wall
  • Certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
  • Energy Star certified
  • 5-year warranty

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Filter replacement costs can be high as more filters need to be replaced. Last up to 1 year when running 24/7
  • Airflow pattern is not ideal which reduces cleaning efficiency. CADR may be higher if the front panel can allow more air to go through.
  • Some links ionizer to ozone emission. An amount of 0.002 ppm was recorded on low fan speed vs. 0.05 ppm max limit by CARB, though it can be turned off.

Bottom Line:

We’ve no doubt how effective the RabbitAir MinusA2 SPA-780A is in protecting allergy and asthma sufferers from harmful allergens and its byproducts. If you’re serious about it, this AAFC certified air purifier is one of the best you will find, thanks to its patented 6-stage filtration.

#3. Levoit LV-PUR131 Air Purifier: Best Value for Money

With a value and price like this, it’s not hard to see why Levoit is winning the race in the low-range air purifier market.

The Levoit LV-PUR131 air purifier is launched in 2019. And stats show it quickly becomes one of the best-selling new generation air purifiers, especially among those battling allergies and asthma.

This model has 3 layers of filtration which consist of a pre-filter, a decent size true HEPA and an activated carbon filter. This combination is able to remove odors and 99.97% of allergies-causing microbial down to 0.3 microns.

It’s worth mentioning that the use of carbon pellets, instead of carbon pad, has enhanced the odor removal process. It can now absorb faster and last longer. Best of all, you’ll find these filters cheap and easy to replace.

In terms of the price vs. value, this air purifier has over-delivered. But there are two issues which can be improved on – fan quality and air intake area. Some link the fan quality to noise and mediocre performance.

As said before, it would be difficult to achieve a better CADR score if the air intake area is not maximized.

What We Liked:

  • Cleans the air in rooms up to 360 sq. ft. and CADR 135 in general
  • Very low energy use 40W and 0.8W on standby power
  • Low noise level range from 27 to 53 dB
  • Smart sensor monitors air quality in real-time
  • Auto mode automatically adjusts fan speeds in response to air quality
  • Simple control: 3-speed, timer, sleep mode, change filter indicator
  • Energy Star, CARB, FCC Certified and CE Listed
  • 1-year warranty covers for parts, labor, and service

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Fan quality can be better
  • Return airflow is restricted by small air intake areas. The airflow pattern is not ideal for maximum cleaning efficiency
  • Some claim air leaks at the fan chamber.

Bottom Line:

If you’re looking for an air purifier that has been proven to help reduces allergies and asthma without having to break your bank, Levoit LV-PUR131 is still the undefeated champ.

#4. Coway Airmega 400 Air Purifier: Best Air Flow for Maximum Performance

The Coway Airmega 400 has made it into our list for some good reasons. Seriously! There’s no magic pill in making our air clean. But it does demand some good engineering decisions.

We’re excited to see an industrial-like centrifugal fan sitting inside this air purifier. And we know it means serious business. This type of fan is able to produce very high airflow despite all the resistances.

At AHAM rated room size 1550 sq. ft., it can clean the room air two times in one hour. The air changes will be higher if your space is smaller than the rated one.

Besides, the air purifier has two true HEPA coupled with activated carbon filters. One on each left and right side. This design maximizes the air intake area to enable higher ACH for excellent air filtration. To effectively remove 99.97% of pollutants down to 0.3 microns and odor or VOCs.

All without generating too much noise from 22 to 52 dB and consuming much less power about 66W.

But good stuff never comes cheap. This model has a price tag of a high-end air purifier and the same can be expected of the filter replacement cost.

What We Liked:

  • Airflow pattern created increases cleaning efficiency
  • Pollution sensor monitors air quality in real-time and indicates it on colored LED ring
  • 5 fan modes: Smart, Sleep, Low, Medium, and High
  • Smart mode with 3 settings: Fan speeds automatically adjust based on air quality and lighting conditions
  • Includes a washable pre-filter to catch larger particles
  • Timer, change filter indicator for both washable pre-filter and HEPA filter.
  • 1-year warranty covers internal malfunctions
  • 5-year warranty covers motor and electronic parts

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Pricey unit and filter replacement cost. Last up to 1 year.

Bottom Line:

It’s clear to us just how strong the Coway Airmega 400 is in cranking out clean air, thanks to its powerful fan and twin filters. If you’re very sensitive to allergens and odors, and you have a large area to clean, this beast is really your savior.

#5. AeraMax 300 Air Purifier: AAFA Certified

There’s only a couple of air purifiers that are certified asthma and allergy-friendly in all our reviews. And the AeraMax 300 is one of the select few. This classic air purifier may look humble amid strong competition but nothing really matters if it can’t live up to the reputation.

This model employs two layers of mechanical filters. The first defense is a carbon filter that aims to remove large particles and odors. Next, is a 12.6 in x 16.3 in true HEPA filter with anti-microbial treatment that aims to capture 99.97% of allergens down to 0.3 microns while protecting against microbial growth.

It has a very easy-to-use control panel and easy-to-change filter bank that make life a lot easier when doing maintenance.

A few issues came up while reviewing this air purifier. The built-in plasma function might cause a problem for those sensitive to ozone. But no worries. It can be turned off with a button on the side of the panel.

In our opinion, the AeraMax 300 lacks the competitive edges to be priced over $200.

What We Liked:

  • Cleans the air in rooms up to 300 sq. ft. AHAM rated
  • Energy use 6W on low and 86W on high
  • Aerasmart sensor monitors air quality and automatically adjusts fan speeds
  • Certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
  • 3-year warranty covers for parts, service, and support

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Some link Plasma technology to ozone
  • Can be noisy at higher fan speeds and no sleep mode to dim the light
  • Need to run for a longer time due to low pollen CADR 188

Bottom Line:

If all you need is a basic machine with clear cut functions and have been proven to work against allergies and asthma, this classic and AAFA certified AeraMax 300 will suit you best.
